Refrigerator Size Guide: How Many Cubic Feet Does Your Family Need?

Choosing a refrigerator that is too small means a crammed fridge and spoiled food; too big and you pay to cool empty shelves. Here is how to land on the right size.

Don't forget the freezer

Total capacity includes both compartments. If your family freezes a lot of meat, look specifically at freezer volume — or pair a medium fridge with a separate deep freezer.

Measure before you buy

  • Measure the width, depth and height of the space.
  • Allow about 2 inches on the sides and top, and space at the back for ventilation.
  • Check that the doors can open fully, especially next to a wall.
  • Measure doorways and staircases on the delivery route.

Think about the next few years

A refrigerator lasts many years. If your family is likely to grow — or you are setting up a home after marriage — buy for the family you will have, not just the one you have today.
