Electricity bills in Pakistan have risen sharply, and appliances are where most of the units go. These tips focus on the changes that make the biggest difference.
Air conditioners (the biggest consumer)
- Set 26°C, not 18°C. Each degree lower makes the AC work harder. A ceiling fan at low speed with the AC at 26°C feels cool and costs far less.
- Clean filters every two weeks in peak summer. Dusty filters reduce cooling and increase consumption.
- Use sleep mode at night so the temperature rises gently as your body cools.
- Block the sun. Curtains or blinds on west-facing windows cut heat significantly.
- Choose inverter when replacing an old AC — see inverter vs non-inverter.
- Get the size right using the tonnage calculator.
Refrigerator and freezer
- Leave space behind and around the fridge for airflow, and keep it away from the stove and sunlight.
- Don't put hot food inside. Let it cool to room temperature first.
- Check the door seal. If a sheet of paper slides out easily when the door is closed on it, the gasket needs attention.
- Keep the freezer reasonably full — frozen items help hold the cold.
Laundry, kitchen and everything else
- Wash full loads in cold water whenever possible.
- Use the microwave to reheat instead of the electric oven.
- Switch off at the wall — TVs, chargers and dispensers draw standby power.
- Run heavy appliances outside peak hours if you are on a time-of-use tariff.
- Replace very old appliances. A decade-old fridge or AC can use far more electricity than a modern inverter model.
How much can you save?
